Donald Trump’s appearance at Game 3 of the NBA Finals drew boos from sections of the Madison Square Garden crowd, while the president insisted the reaction was “mostly cheers.” The visit also sparked security changes, cancelled watch parties and renewed debate over his popularity in New York.

Donald Trump’s visit to the third game of the NBA Finals between the San Antonio Spurs and the New York Knicks generated a visible reaction inside Madison Square Garden, where many spectators booed the US president. Although videos from the arena captured the crowd’s response, Trump later rejected the idea that the reception was negative, maintaining that the atmosphere was largely supportive and enthusiastic.

The appearance attracted attention not only because of the crowd’s reaction but also due to heightened security arrangements, cancelled public events around the venue and renewed discussion about Trump’s standing in New York City. His comments after the game added another layer to the debate, as he characterized the response very differently from what many attendees witnessed.

Crowd reaction dominates Trump’s NBA finals visit

During the third game of the NBA Finals, footage showed spectators booing while Avery Wilson performed the national anthem. Trump attended the event alongside special envoy Steve Witkoff, granddaughter Kai Trump and Madison Square Garden CEO James Dolan.

Despite the audible reaction inside the arena, Trump later dismissed suggestions that the reception had been hostile. Speaking to reporters after the game, he said he believed the audience response was overwhelmingly positive.

“I thought it was very good. It was certainly amazing. I think mostly cheers. It was loud. And it was very enthusiastic,” Trump said after the contest.

The 79-year-old also encountered criticism outside the arena. Reports indicated that multiple signs expressing opposition to him were visible and that rude gestures were directed toward the presidential motorcade. As the convoy approached Madison Square Garden, boos were reportedly heard from people gathered nearby.

Security measures and fan frustration ahead of Game 3

Even before Trump arrived, his planned attendance had already generated criticism among some Knicks supporters. Following the announcement last week, several fans expressed concern that the president’s presence might distract the team as it attempted to continue what had become the second-longest unbeaten playoff game streak in NBA history.

The security arrangements surrounding the visit also affected fans hoping to participate in celebrations around the arena. Game watch parties scheduled near Madison Square Garden were cancelled because of Trump’s attendance, while the New York Police Department established a broad security perimeter across surrounding blocks.

These measures added to the frustration among some supporters who felt the event had become more complicated because of the presidential visit.

Game result and Trump’s previous reception at sporting events

On the court, the Knicks suffered their first defeat of the finals, losing 115-111 to the Spurs. Despite that setback, New York still holds a 2-1 lead in the series.

The reaction at Madison Square Garden was not the first instance of Trump facing boos at a major sporting event. During his appearance at the US Open 2025 men’s final in Queens, audience members were also heard booing the president.

Trump’s complicated relationship with New York City has frequently been highlighted despite his early rise to prominence as a Manhattan real estate developer. Reports have described him as highly unpopular in the city.

The voting numbers from the 2024 presidential election reflected that divide. Trump received fewer than 839,000 votes across New York City, while Democratic nominee and then-Vice President Kamala Harris secured 1.9 million votes.

Why the incident has drawn attention

The differing interpretations of the atmosphere inside Madison Square Garden have become a focal point following the game. While video recordings and eyewitness accounts highlighted widespread booing, Trump publicly maintained that the response consisted mostly of cheers and enthusiasm.

At the same time, his attendance had wider effects beyond the arena itself, leading to enhanced security operations and the cancellation of nearby watch parties. Combined with the Knicks’ defeat and the political backdrop of Trump’s popularity in New York, the episode has become another example of how presidential appearances at major sporting events can generate attention both on and off the court.

By insisting that the crowd welcomed him despite the audible boos, Trump offered a sharply contrasting interpretation of an evening that sparked debate among spectators, political observers and basketball fans alike.
