If you thought Kratos was done smashing gods after God of War: Ragnarök, then think again. Yes, Sony Monica just dropped one of the biggest surprises from June 2026. PlayStation State of Play that is God of War: Laufey.
But here's the twist nobody saw coming: you won't be playing as Kratos.
Instead, players step into the boots of Laufey (Faye), Kratos' wife and Atreus' mother, whose story has mostly lived in the background of the Norse saga. Now, she's getting the spotlight, and honestly, it's about time.
The reveal trailer showed Faye waking up after death in a mysterious realm called The Everywhen, a supernatural afterlife where gods from different mythologies clash for power. Think of it as the ultimate crossover event, but with way more swords and existential crises.
And yes, the combat looks very different.
While Kratos is known for his heavy-hitting, rage-fuelled fighting style, Faye brings a faster, more agile approach. She wields a magical sword, launches aerial combos and can manually jump during combat, something long-time fans haven't seen since God of War: Ascension.
The result feels like a tank and more like an action hero pulling off stylish combos.
For the first time in the modern God of War series, players won't control Kratos. Instead, you will step into the role of Laufey (Faye); the legendary giant warrior story has remained largely untold until now.
Forget Kratos' heavy-hitting style. Faye uses a magical sword, aerial attacks, and agile movement, introducing a more fluid combat system that even brings back manual jumping.
The game is set in The Everywhen, an afterlife realm where gods from multiple mythologies exist. The reveal trailer even teased Egyptian mythology through the appearance of Sekhmet.
Faye won't be fighting alone. She will be accompanied by a talking sword and a mysterious cube-shaped companion nicknamed 'Frank', adding a fresh dynamic to the journey.
The story explores Faye's past, her fight against Odin's plans and the events that made her one of the most feared warriors in the Nine Realms, including her legendary battle with Thor.
