Fresh questions are surfacing around one of the most shocking moments in recent American political history, as allies within the MAGA movement begin to publicly challenge the narrative surrounding the 2024 Butler rally shooting. At the centre of this renewed scrutiny is Marjorie Taylor Greene, who has openly questioned why Donald Trump has not taken a more visible role in pushing for answers.



The incident, which unfolded in Butler, Pennsylvania, saw a gunman open fire at a campaign rally, leaving Trump and two others injured. A member of the audience, Corey Comperatore, was killed, while the attacker, identified as Thomas Crooks, was shot dead at the scene by law enforcement. Authorities described him as acting alone, but that explanation has not fully settled concerns among some of Trump’s supporters.

Nearly two years on, the event continues to cast a long shadow, with questions now emerging not just about security lapses but also about the response that followed.



Greene’s remarks came after she shared and endorsed a widely circulated post by activist Trisha Hope, who raised concerns about both the official account and Trump’s own handling of the aftermath. The post revisited Trump’s early remarks about the attack, where he described the experience as too painful to recount more than once.



For some, that statement struck an unusual note. Critics within the movement suggested it contrasted with Trump’s typically outspoken and combative style. Hope described the response as out of character, arguing that it raised more questions than it answered. Greene amplified those concerns, calling the post “extremely important” and urging others to consider its implications. She then went further, asking why Trump himself had not been more vocal in demanding a deeper investigation.

Her comments have resonated with a section of the MAGA base that believes key details remain unclear. The demand is not limited to Greene alone. Prominent voices such as Candace Owens and Tucker Carlson have also questioned aspects of the incident, particularly the apparent breach in security that allowed the attacker to get so close.



At the heart of the debate lies a simple but pressing question: how did such a lapse occur at an event guarded by the Secret Service? For sceptics, the explanation of a lone gunman has not fully addressed concerns about planning, access, and response time.

Owens, in particular, has been vocal about what she views as inconsistencies, arguing that the level of protection typically surrounding a former president makes such an attack difficult to comprehend without significant failures. Others have echoed similar sentiments, calling for greater transparency and accountability from the agencies involved.



Greene has framed the issue in more personal terms, pointing to the loss suffered by Comperatore’s family and insisting they deserve clear answers. Her criticism of Trump’s relative silence has added a new layer to the discussion, shifting some of the focus back onto the former president himself.

As the debate gathers momentum, it reflects a broader tension within the movement. While loyalty to Trump remains strong, the willingness of some allies to question both the official narrative and his response suggests a rare moment of internal scrutiny.
