The Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic Remake was supposed to be a dream announcement for RPG fans. Revealed in 2021 as a complete rebuild of BioWare's legendary 2003 game, the project instantly became one of the most anticipated Star Wars titles in development. Nearly five years later, however, excitement has slowly turned into frustration.

With no gameplay footage, no release window, and very few meaningful updates, many fans are beginning to question why the game was announced so early. Following another week of major gaming events without any mention of the remake, the backlash from the community is growing louder than ever.

Why fans are losing patience with the KOTOR remake

When the remake was first announced during PlayStation Showcase 2021, expectations were sky high. The original Knights of the Old Republic is widely considered one of the greatest Star Wars games ever made, thanks to its memorable characters, branching choices, and iconic Darth Revan storyline.

However, the excitement quickly ran into trouble. Reports emerged in 2022 that development had hit major roadblocks, with the project eventually moving away from Aspyr and into the hands of Saber Interactive. Since then, official information has been extremely limited.

While Saber has repeatedly stated that the remake is still alive, fans have received little else beyond those assurances. In March 2026, Saber Interactive chief creative officer Tim Willits once again confirmed that the game was "still in development," but offered no additional details.

Summer Game Fest disappointment adds fuel to the fire

The latest wave of frustration arrived after Summer Game Fest and PlayStation's recent presentations came and went without any KOTOR remake appearance. Many players had hoped the events would finally provide a trailer, development update, or at least some proof that progress was being made. Instead, the remake was once again absent from the conversation. Industry observers noted that KOTOR was among the biggest missing games from this year's showcase season.

For some fans, the continued silence has become harder to accept than the delays themselves. The project is approaching its fifth anniversary since being revealed, yet there is still no gameplay footage available to the public.

Fans react: 'I don't buy it anymore'

The discussion across Reddit and gaming forums has become increasingly sceptical. One Reddit user wrote, "I want the game as much as anyone, but until we see any physical proof of development I don't buy it." Another player argued that developers should stay silent until the game is much closer to launch, saying they would rather hear nothing until release is within sight.

Other fans have compared the situation to long running development mysteries such as The Elder Scrolls VI. Many believe announcing projects years before meaningful progress is shown only creates unrealistic expectations and eventual disappointment.

The overall mood is not necessarily anger at the developers. Instead, many players feel exhausted by the endless cycle of rumours, speculation, and vague reassurances.

The game is reportedly still alive

Despite the criticism, there is still evidence that the remake has not been cancelled. Saber executives have repeatedly maintained that development is continuing. Reports over the past year have also suggested that work remains active under Saber and its associated studios.

Industry reports from late 2025 and early 2026 indicated that the project was still moving forward, even though details remain tightly guarded. Polygon recently listed the remake among Star Wars games currently in development, while multiple reports continue to describe it as an active project. That said, fans argue that confirmation alone is no longer enough. After years of waiting, many believe the next update needs to be something substantial.

The early announcement backlash returns

The KOTOR remake controversy has reignited a larger debate within the gaming industry. More publishers are announcing projects years before release in an effort to generate excitement and reassure investors.

The problem is that long development cycles can leave fans waiting for years with little information. Every showcase becomes another opportunity for disappointment, and every missed appearance creates new doubts.

For the KOTOR remake, that problem has become especially visible. What started as one of the most exciting reveals in Star Wars gaming has gradually become a symbol of how difficult long term hype can be to sustain.

What happens next?

Many fans are now looking toward future events such as The Game Awards in hopes of finally seeing something concrete. Until then, the remake remains in a strange position.

Officially, the game is still in development. Unofficially, a growing number of players feel they have been waiting far too long for proof. If a new trailer or gameplay reveal eventually arrives, excitement will likely return quickly. But after nearly five years of silence, expectations have changed. Fans no longer want promises. They want to see the game.
