The Paper Season 2 arrived on Peacock on September 9, 2026, bringing all 10 episodes of the newsroom comedy at once. After the Toledo Truth Teller’s surprise success in Season 1, Ned Sampson starts the new season determined to prove that the paper’s awards were not a one-time miracle. But by the finale, his ambition has put the very newsroom he wants to save in a dangerous position.

Ned’s biggest story becomes his biggest problem

Ned spends much of Season 2 chasing a story involving the powerful local Glass Club. He is warned away from the investigation, but instead of letting it go, he secretly builds a team to keep digging. The move is classic Ned. He wants to do important journalism, but he also desperately wants to be the person who proves that the Truth Teller can punch above its weight. Peacock’s episode guide confirms that the secret investigation involves a possible crime connected to powerful advertisers.

By The NS Board, the investigation has become too important to quietly bury. Ned and Detrick have a major story ready, but getting it into print comes with serious sacrifices. The finale therefore turns the question around. It is no longer simply about whether Ned can find a great story. It is about whether he is willing to accept what publishing that story could cost the newspaper.

That is what makes the ending work. Ned has spent the season behaving as though getting the big scoop is proof that he deserves to run the paper. The finale finally forces him to understand that being editor is not about winning every fight. Sometimes protecting journalism means knowing exactly what you are putting at risk before you hit publish.

What happens to Ned and Mare?

Ned and Mare’s relationship has been another ticking bomb throughout Season 2. The problem is obvious. Ned is the editor in chief and Mare is his reporter, so their secret romance is not just workplace gossip. It creates a genuine conflict for both of them.

By Episode 9, the rumours surrounding Mare become serious enough that Ned tries to protect her from the fallout. Meanwhile, Mare has already seen what life looks like inside a much better resourced newsroom. Her time around the Cincinnati Chronicle gives her a glimpse of the kind of opportunities that the Truth Teller simply cannot offer right now.

The finale does not give the pair an easy romantic ending. Instead, Mare has to decide how badly she wants to play in the big leagues. That choice matters because staying with Ned and staying at the Truth Teller are no longer simply personal decisions. Her career is moving forward, and she has to decide whether Toledo is still where she wants to build it.

Does Ned save the Toledo Truth Teller?

Not completely. That is probably the most important thing to understand about the Season 2 ending. The newspaper is not magically fixed because Ned and Detrick have a great investigation. The financial and professional problems that have followed the Truth Teller are still there, and Ned’s Glass Club crusade has arguably made his position even more complicated.

What changes is Ned himself. Season 2 begins with a man desperate to prove that his newsroom deserves respect. It ends with him confronting the fact that chasing recognition can become dangerous when other people have to pay the price. The finale also leaves plenty of room for another season. Greg Daniels confirmed that there is no official Season 3 order yet, but he and co creator Michael Koman have already opened the writers’ room and started discussing stories they did not get to use.

Will there be The Paper season 3?

Peacock has not officially renewed The Paper for Season 3 as of September 10, 2026. However, the fact that Daniels and Koman have already started developing stories for a potential third season is a very encouraging sign. Daniels has also said he would like to make more episodes, so the door is very much open.

For now, the Truth Teller survives, but Ned has learned that saving a newspaper is much harder than getting people to notice it. And if The Paper returns, the fallout from his biggest story could be exactly where the next chapter begins.

Where to watch The Paper season 2?
