Elon Musk’s Starlink satellite internet project is once again at the center of attention as uncertainty continues over its launch timeline in India. A recent Bloomberg report suggested that the company’s final regulatory approvals may face delays because of security concerns, but Starlink has rejected those claims and insists its engagement with the Indian government remains active and constructive. Although the company has already achieved important milestones, several approvals are still required before commercial services can begin.
According to Bloomberg, India’s security agencies have yet to provide the final permissions necessary for Starlink to officially launch its satellite internet service in the country. The report stated that authorities are reviewing multiple security-related issues connected to satellite communications before allowing commercial operations.
One of the concerns mentioned involves reports alleging that Starlink equipment has been used in Iran even though the service has not been formally authorized there. The report also said officials are examining whether such situations could create challenges for India’s own security framework.
Additionally, Bloomberg claimed that Indian authorities are assessing how directives issued by foreign governments might potentially influence or conflict with India’s national security interests in relation to satellite communications.
Starlink has strongly disputed the Bloomberg report and maintains that its relationship with Indian authorities remains productive.
Lauren Dreyer, Vice President of Starlink Business Operations, described the report as being based on “unsubstantiated claims from anonymous sources.” The company has emphasized that discussions with the government continue and that it does not agree with the conclusions presented in the report.
Rather than indicating a stalled process, Starlink says it remains engaged with regulators and continues working toward bringing its services to India.
The company has also stressed that it remains optimistic about the eventual rollout despite ongoing speculation surrounding the approval timeline.
Although commercial operations have not yet started, Starlink has already crossed one major regulatory milestone.
The company has obtained a Global Mobile Personal Communication by Satellite (GMPCS) licence from the Indian government. Securing this licence represents a significant step forward in its plans to introduce satellite internet services across the country.
Alongside licensing progress, Starlink has also been developing its ground infrastructure and maintaining close coordination with regulators as preparations continue.
However, the GMPCS licence alone does not allow the company to begin serving customers immediately.
Before Starlink can officially launch its services, several important regulatory requirements remain incomplete.
The company must still obtain spectrum-related approvals and satisfy other outstanding regulatory obligations before commercial operations can commence. Until those processes are finalized, no official launch date has been announced.
While Bloomberg’s report indicates that security clearances remain under review, Starlink continues to project confidence about its future in the Indian market.
Lauren Dreyer stated that the company has received encouraging feedback regarding Starlink’s capabilities and its ability to contribute to India’s connectivity objectives, particularly in remote and underserved regions.
She added, “We remain fully committed to India and look forward to working with the government to bring Starlink’s services to the country in the near future.”
At present, Starlink’s entry into India remains tied to the completion of the remaining regulatory and security approvals.
The company continues building infrastructure and engaging with authorities while awaiting the final permissions needed to begin commercial operations. Meanwhile, potential customers and industry observers are watching closely for greater clarity on when the long-anticipated satellite internet service will finally become available.
Although conflicting narratives have emerged regarding possible delays, both the government review process and Starlink’s continued discussions will ultimately determine the timeline for its launch in India. Until those remaining approvals are secured, the rollout remains on hold despite the progress already achieved.
