In a shocking and disturbing incident, Shamar Elkins, an Army veteran, has been accused of killing his seven children and their cousin in a tragedy that has sent shockwaves across social media. But, apart from this, reports even indicate a more shocking revelation: that weeks before the incident, Elkins admitted to being overwhelmed by some "dark thoughts". He warned his stepfather that some people "do not return from their demons". Moreover, following the incident, some chilling details have surfaced about his mental health and his last conversation with his mother and stepfather. Let's find out what more Shamar Elkins said.
As per reports, authorities have shared that the incident unfolded in the early hours of Sunday in Shreveport, when a 31-year-old Shamar Elkins allegedly carried out a deadly shooting inside a residence following a reported argument with his wife, Shaneiqua Elkins, around 6 a.m.
Shockingly, the incident left his eight children, aged between 3 and 11, fatally killed, and two women who were reportedly his wife and girlfriend are left with serious injuries.
Earlier that day, on Easter Sunday, Elkins had contacted his mother and stepfather, expressing that he was struggling with his "dark thoughts", and also spoke about wanting to end his life, referencing ongoing marital issues, including a possible divorce.
While speaking to a publication, Elkins said, "I told him, ‘You can beat stuff, man. I don’t care what you’re going through; you can beat it." "Then I remember him telling me, 'Some people don’t come back from their demons," he added.
As per the police, one of the children was shot and killed while trying to escape onto the roof. And Elkins was also shot dead later by the officers during an attempted carjacking.
During the attack, he also opened fire on two women, identified as the mothers of his children and his alleged girlfriend, leaving them injured.
According to the New York Times, Shamar's mother Mahelia Elkins shared that she was unsure about the problems her son and his wife had been dealing with. The couple, who married in 2024, shared four children.
Shamar has been identified as the shooter, who used to work at UPS and earlier served in the Louisiana Army National Guard from August 2013 to August 2020 in roles including signal support systems specialist and fire support specialist.
A coworker described him as a devoted father but said he often seemed under intense stress, even pulling at his hair to the point of developing a visible bald spot.
