CM Yogi Adityanath Defends Sanatan Traditions and Rule of Law in Assembly Debate

During a discussion in the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath strongly defended the government’s position on the Shankaracharya controversy. He emphasized that the title of Shankaracharya holds the highest spiritual authority within India’s Sanatan tradition and cannot be self-assumed by any individual

The Chief Minister stated that such a sacred designation follows established spiritual lineage, discipline, and traditional procedures. He reminded the House of a past incident in Varanasi during a previous administration, questioning why legal action was taken at that time if the individual in question genuinely held the revered position.

Highlighting the importance of governance, the Chief Minister reiterated that no one stands above the law — not even the Chief Minister himself. He affirmed that the government believes firmly in constitutional order and equal enforcement of the law.

Referring to the massive gathering of nearly 45 million devotees during Mauni Amavasya at the Magh Mela, he explained that strict entry and exit regulations are necessary to prevent chaos. Ignoring established safety protocols, he warned, can lead to stampedes and put innocent lives at risk.

The Chief Minister elaborated on the historic contribution of Adi Shankaracharya, who established four major Peethas in four directions of India:

Jyotish Peeth in the North

Sringeri Peeth in the South

Jagannath Puri Peeth in the East

Dwarka Peeth in the West

Each Peeth is associated with one of the four Vedas — Rigveda, Yajurveda, Samaveda, and Atharvaveda — and linked to profound Mahavakyas such as “Prajnanam Brahma,” “Aham Brahmasmi,” “Tat Tvam Asi,” and “Ayam Atma Brahma.” These philosophical declarations form the spiritual core of Indian thought and self-realization.

The Chief Minister accused opposition parties of repeatedly amplifying non-issues to create unnecessary controversy. He stated that debates in the Assembly should focus on facts and constructive discussion rather than attempts to mislead the public.

He asserted that discipline, tradition, and lawful conduct must be respected in both spiritual and civic matters, and that responsible individuals should uphold these principles.
