Tesla CEO Elon Musk said on Saturday that the company’s TerraFab project, aimed at producing artificial intelligence chips, is expected to launch within seven days. The update comes as Tesla continues to expand its efforts to develop advanced chips that support its autonomous driving systems and other artificial intelligence technologies.

The project is part of Tesla’s broader strategy to secure the computing power required for its long-term self-driving ambitions. Musk has previously indicated that producing enough chips to meet demand could require building a much larger manufacturing facility than the company currently relies on.

Tesla’s AI chip plans and the TerraFab project

Tesla is currently working on its fifth-generation artificial intelligence chip, often referred to as the AI5 chip. The chip is being designed to support the company’s autonomous driving technology and strengthen the computing systems used in its vehicles.

Musk discussed possible manufacturing approaches for the chip during Tesla’s annual meeting last year. At that time, he explained that producing the required volume of AI chips could present challenges if the company relied solely on existing suppliers.

The chips are intended to power Tesla’s autonomous driving systems, including the company’s Full Self-Driving software. These systems rely on large amounts of computing power to process data and make real-time decisions while a vehicle is operating.

Musk has also referenced the AI5 chip in earlier remarks and highlighted the role it will play in Tesla’s technology roadmap.

Supplier partnerships and possible Intel talks

Tesla already works with several semiconductor manufacturers to produce its chips. According to Musk, the company is partnering with Taiwan’s TSMC and South Korea’s Samsung for chip production.

However, Musk has also indicated that Tesla could explore additional partnerships to expand manufacturing capacity. During the company’s annual meeting last year, he mentioned the possibility of working with Intel.

At the time, Musk said, “You know, maybe we'll, we'll do something with Intel.” He also clarified that there was no formal agreement in place.

“We haven't signed any deal, but it's probably worth having discussions with Intel,” he said.

Tesla has not confirmed any finalized partnership related to the TerraFab project. The company also did not immediately respond to a Reuters request seeking further details about the plan.

Why Tesla may build a gigantic chip factory

Musk has repeatedly suggested that Tesla may eventually need to build its own large-scale manufacturing facility to meet demand for artificial intelligence chips.

Last year, he explained that even optimistic production estimates from current suppliers might not be enough to support Tesla’s future requirements.

“Even when we extrapolate the best-case scenario for chip production from our suppliers, it's still not enough,” Musk said at Tesla’s annual general meeting.

Because of this limitation, Musk said Tesla might need to construct what he described as a “Tesla terafab.” He compared the potential facility to the company’s Gigafactories but on a much larger scale.

“So I think we may have to do a Tesla terafab. It's like giga but way bigger,” Musk said. “I can't see any other way to get to the volume of chips that we're looking for.”

He added that building a massive chip fabrication facility could be necessary to achieve the production levels Tesla expects in the future.

“So I think we're probably going to have to build a gigantic chip fab. It's got to be done,” he said.

What the TerraFab launch could mean

If the TerraFab project launches within the timeline Musk outlined, it would mark another step in Tesla’s efforts to strengthen control over the technology behind its autonomous driving systems.

The initiative reflects the company’s focus on expanding artificial intelligence capabilities while ensuring enough computing hardware is available to support those systems.

Tesla’s AI chip strategy currently involves both partnerships with semiconductor manufacturers and consideration of building its own large-scale production facility.

As Tesla continues developing its fifth-generation AI chip and evaluates manufacturing options, the TerraFab project could play a key role in supporting the company’s long-term autonomous technology plans.
