The Academy Awards, now in its 98th edition, remains the highlight of the awards season. While the ceremony is known for its star-studded guest list and high-profile nominees, the event also operates under a strict set of rules for attendees.

Everyone attending the show, including celebrities and seat fillers, is expected to follow the academy’s guidelines, which cover everything from dress code and seating conduct to food restrictions and acceptance speech limits. Below is a detailed look at some of the policies that shape how the evening unfolds.

Dress codes and evolving fashion expectations

Dress guidelines have long been a part of the awards ceremony. During her time advising the event, fashion consultant Edith Head introduced a strict white-tie dress code.

Guests were encouraged to wear formal evening gowns that were either maxi or floor length. Pastel colors were preferred, while shorter outfits were discouraged. According to archived notes from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, red dresses and glittery outfits were also not favored.

Male attendees were expected to arrive in white tie accompanied by conventional formal evening accessories.

Over time, these requirements have shifted. Today the ceremony generally follows a black-tie dress standard. In addition, the academy has introduced a Sustainable Style Guide encouraging guests and nominees to consider vintage pieces, loaned outfits and reused fashion when selecting their attire.

Bathroom breaks and strict seating rules

Once the ceremony begins, attendees are expected to remain seated throughout the telecast. Movement in and out of the theatre is restricted to commercial breaks.

If someone leaves the auditorium outside those breaks, they are not allowed back into the theatre until the next commercial interval. The policy effectively means guests must plan their bathroom visits carefully.

An academy member explained the rule in a 2013 conversation with Vanity Fair: guests should time their bathroom trips so they can return before the telecast resumes, otherwise they must wait for the next break before re-entering the auditorium.

Food policies are also strict. The Dolby Theatre does not permit outside food or beverages, including water. However, there have been memorable moments that stood out against this rule. When Ellen DeGeneres hosted the 2014 Oscars, she famously handed out pizza slices to attendees between award presentations.

Another notable moment occurred in 2020 when young actor Julia Butters was spotted eating a turkey sandwich. She later told People magazine: “It’s the Oscars, there can’t be any regrets. There’s no going back.”

Acceptance speeches and audience etiquette

There are also expectations around what happens on stage. Acceptance speeches are limited to 45 seconds. Once the time limit is reached, play-off music begins to signal that the speaker should conclude.

Despite the guideline, winners sometimes exceed the limit due to the excitement of the moment. Actor Adrien Brody set a new benchmark in 2025 by delivering the longest speech in the ceremony’s history while accepting the Best Actor award for The Brutalist. His remarks lasted more than five minutes, during which he repeatedly asked for the music to be stopped as he tried to finish speaking.

Industry insiders say there is also an unspoken expectation for winners to acknowledge the people who supported them. One anonymous source told Vanity Fair that speeches should remain modest and appreciative, while also thanking “the boss.”

Seat fillers and behind-the-scenes rules

Another little-known aspect of the ceremony involves seat fillers. These individuals occupy empty seats in the auditorium whenever invited guests step out, ensuring that the audience appears full on camera.

Media personality Arjun Manjunath told People that the role comes with its own set of rules. Seat fillers are instructed not to initiate conversations with celebrities unless the celebrity starts the interaction.

He compared the experience at the Grammy Awards in 2026 to something “very dystopian,” saying it had “very Hunger Games vibes.”

Seat fillers must also hand over their phones during the event. They are responsible for arranging and paying for their own travel and accommodation, and they are not paid for the role.

The surprising rule about Oscar statuettes

Even the iconic trophy comes with restrictions. While the golden statuette is widely seen as one of the most valuable awards in entertainment, it cannot be freely sold.

Under academy regulations, the resale value of an Oscar statuette is officially set at just $1. The rule requires winners who wish to sell or transfer the award to first offer it back to the Academy for that amount.

The policy also extends to heirs and family members who might inherit the statuette, ensuring that the award remains closely tied to the institution that presents it.

In short, while the Oscars are known for glamour and celebration, the ceremony also operates under a detailed set of rules covering everything from fashion and speeches to bathroom breaks and the fate of the famous golden statuette.
