South Korea's entertainment industry has once again found itself under the spotlight as multiple K-drama actors face investigations and tax disputes linked to alleged misuse of one-person corporations and shell companies.

While authorities continue tightening oversight on celebrity finances, agencies representing several stars maintain that the issues largely stem from conflicting interpretations of tax laws rather than deliberate wrongdoing.

The growing list of actors facing scrutiny now includes actor Ji Chang-wook, whose case has reignited conversations surrounding celebrity corporations and tax practices in the Korean entertainment industry.

Why celebrity tax investigations are increasing in South Korea?

The recent investigations highlight growing scrutiny over how entertainers structure their finances through independent corporations. While tax authorities increasingly view one-person corporations as potential tools for lowering personal tax obligations, agencies continue arguing that many cases stem from unclear legal boundaries regarding income attribution. As more actors face audits and tax reassessments, the debate surrounding celebrity corporations and tax law interpretation appears far from over.

Ji Chang-wook joins growing list of stars facing tax scrutiny

Ji Chang-wook has become the latest celebrity to be investigated after reportedly undergoing an unscheduled special audit tied to both his domestic and overseas entertainment earnings. The actor was reportedly ordered to pay billions of won in taxes following the investigation.

His agency, Spring Company, strongly denied accusations of intentional wrongdoing, claiming the issue stemmed from legal differences regarding whether income should be categorized under an individual or corporate structure.

On the 2nd, Ji Chang Wook's agency, Spring Company, released an official statement saying, "We deeply apologize for causing concern to many people due to this matter. However, we want to clearly state that there was no intentional income omission or fraudulent evasion."

Ji Chang Wook's side explained through an official statement: "During the recent tax investigation, the company transparently submitted related materials and sincerely cooperated with the inquiry, but we confirmed that there was a difference in interpretation and application of tax law with the tax authorities regarding whether the income from the actor's entertainment activities should be attributed to the individual or the corporation in accordance with the principle of actual taxation."

They added, "While there is such a difference in opinion, Ji Chang Wook has always prioritized sincere tax compliance and strictly adhered to relevant laws and procedures without any tax issues since his debut in 2008. Therefore, we respect the results of the National Tax Service's investigation and will promptly pay the imposed back taxes according to the relevant procedures."

Cha Eun-woo receives record-breaking tax penalty

Among the biggest cases to emerge was that of Cha Eun-woo, who reportedly received a massive 20 billion won ($13.6 million) tax assessment from the National Tax Service. Authorities reportedly found that a company registered under his mother's name had allegedly functioned as a paper company used to redirect entertainment income and reduce personal tax obligations.

On January 26, Cha Eun Woo took to his personal Instagram, sharing the following statement: "I sincerely bow my head and apologize for causing concern and disappointment to many people due to various recent matters involving myself. I am writing this after finishing my daily duties within the military unit. Currently, I am serving in the military, but this was by no means an intentional choice to avoid this controversy. Last year, I was in a situation where I could no longer postpone my military enlistment, and thus I enlisted without being able to complete the tax investigation procedures.

He added, "For the long period of the past 11 years, despite having more shortcomings than possessions, I was able to be in this undeserved position as 'Cha Eun Woo' thanks to your unreserved love and support. Therefore, I am indescribably sorry for not even being able to repay but to have caused great pain and fatigue to all those who believed in and supported me despite my inadequacies and to the many people I have worked with."

Kim Seon-ho's one-person corporation comes under investigation

Kim Seon-ho also faced questions over a theatrical production company established using his home address, which investigators reportedly reviewed as a potential one-person shell corporation. According to his representatives, the company had already stopped operating before the controversy emerged. The actor later returned corporate expenses, paid additional taxes, and moved to officially dissolve the business.

Fantagio's official statement made it clear that Kim Seon-ho currently conducts all his professional activities under an exclusive contract with the agency and fully complies with legal and tax obligations.

They wrote, "Kim Seon Ho is currently carrying out his activities under an exclusive contract signed with Fantagio in his personal capacity, and he is dutifully following all legal and tax-related procedures regarding his current contractual relationship and activities. We would like to make it clear that there are absolutely no issues whatsoever related to the contract or activities between Kim Seon Ho and Fantagio."

They added, "The one-person corporation mentioned in the reports was established in the past solely for the purpose of theater production and theater-related activities, and it was never created with any intention of tax avoidance or tax evasion. However, after Kim Seon Ho transferred to Fantagio, actual business operations under this corporation ceased approximately one year ago, and the company is currently in the process of being officially dissolved in accordance with relevant laws and procedures."

Yoo Yeon-seok disputes massive tax bill over income classification

Yoo Yeon-seok was also swept into the wave of celebrity tax controversies after being assessed 6.4 billion won ($5.3 million) in taxes. The dispute reportedly centered on how authorities classified income generated through his entertainment work, food business ventures, and YouTube activities. Officials allegedly categorized portions of his company earnings as personal income, pushing him into higher tax brackets.

His agency, King Kong by Starship, disputed the assessment, arguing that the disagreement arose from differing legal interpretations and applications. Following a review process, tax authorities reportedly recognized elements of double taxation and reduced the assessment, which Yoo paid afterward.

Lee Ha-nee challenges back-tax ruling amid corporate controversy

Lee Ha-nee's case has also remained one of the most closely watched after she reportedly received a 6 billion won (approximately $4.5 million) tax assessment following an audit spanning 2024 to 2025. The actress and her agency, Team Hope, have consistently rejected claims of intentional tax evasion, arguing that the issue resulted from differences in tax processing methods between authorities and advisors.

Complicating matters further, her private corporation, Hope Project, attracted attention after reports surfaced that one branch office address was registered at a restaurant in Seoul.

Lee and her husband were additionally referred to prosecutors without detention regarding allegations surrounding an unregistered entertainment agency. Her representatives said the issue resulted from oversight and that proper registration procedures have since been completed.

Despite the criticism, Lee has openly expressed frustration over the extensive audit process, while some fans and observers have defended her by pointing to ongoing ambiguity in laws surrounding celebrity-owned corporations.
