Vanishing Point ending explained: Netflix’s Vanishing Point turns an ordinary apartment building into the centre of a deeply unsettling mystery. The Chinese crime thriller, directed by Cheng Wei Hao and starring Zheng Kai, Liu Haocun and Roy Chiu, was released in China on May 1, 2026, before arriving on Netflix. What begins with Tang Yu desperately searching for his missing son Tang Nuo soon pulls in Lin Yutong’s unresolved assault and Yan Wu’s attempt to hide his dead father. By the final stretch, all three stories lead back to the same building and one horrifying secret hidden behind its walls.


Tang Nuo does not leave the building through a normal door or get carried away by a stranger. He ends up discovering a hidden passage between apartment 302, where Xu Zhijie lives with his daughter Xu Yingying, and apartment 301, where Lin Yutong lives.

The passage was secretly created by Xu Zhijie when he worked on Lin’s apartment. He had been using it to enter her home and sexually assault her, which explains why there were no obvious signs of forced entry. Tang Nuo accidentally discovers the same route and crawls through it, making his disappearance look impossible from the outside.

That is the moment when the film’s three separate mysteries finally begin to connect. What looked like a missing child case is actually the result of a secret space hidden inside the building, and that same space is evidence of a much more serious crime.


The answer is Xu Zhijie. He secretly altered the wall between the two apartments while working on Lin’s home and created a concealed route that allowed him to enter without using the front door. The discovery of the passage therefore does more than explain Tang Nuo’s disappearance because it also provides the physical answer to the mystery surrounding Lin’s assault.

Xu is careful about hiding what he has done, but Tang Nuo’s accidental discovery threatens everything. Once the boy disappears through the passage, Xu has to deal with the possibility that his secret will finally come out.

This is probably the biggest question viewers are left with after the ending. The film gives Yingying a suspiciously active role in the story. She becomes close to Tang Yu’s family, gives Tang Yu information that points suspicion towards her own father and appears to understand much more about the secrets inside apartment 302 than she says openly.

However, the movie never gives a direct confession saying that Yingying planned Tang Nuo’s disappearance. That is important because several Chinese critics have pointed out that the film deliberately changed Yingying from the original novel, removing much of her darker inner motivation and portraying her more as a victim of her father. Still, the film leaves enough clues for viewers to suspect that Yingying was guiding events. She clearly wanted to get away from her father and appears to see Tang Yu’s family as the kind of home she wants for herself, which makes her actions deliberately ambiguous rather than completely innocent.


Yes, Tang Nuo survives. His disappearance is eventually traced back to the hidden passage, and he is rescued after the truth about the apartments comes out. The boy was never simply taken away from the building in the way his parents initially feared.

His discovery is also what sets off the chain reaction that exposes Xu Zhijie. The secret passage that Xu believed would protect him instead becomes the evidence that brings his crimes into the open.

Yan Wu’s story is initially almost impossible to connect to Tang Nuo’s disappearance. After his father dies, Yan hides the body because he wants access to his father’s money and pension related benefits. His increasingly desperate attempts to cover up the death make him look like another possible villain, especially when Tang Nuo suddenly appears in the middle of his problems.

But Yan eventually makes a crucial choice. When Xu Zhijie tries to push him into helping cover up the situation involving Tang Nuo and later threatens Lin Yutong, Yan finally stops protecting himself and fights back.

The final confrontation brings the three storylines together. Yan Wu fights Xu Zhijie in an attempt to protect Lin Yutong, showing that despite everything he has done, he has not completely lost his conscience. Lin then returns and strikes Xu with a bottle, knocking him unconscious.


That detail matters because the film gives Lin the final act of resistance against the man who violated her. Instead of leaving her fate entirely in the hands of the police or another character, the film allows her to confront Xu herself. Xu's crimes are finally exposed, and the hidden passage that once allowed him to control and frighten others becomes the thing that destroys his carefully protected secret.

Yingying's ending is much sadder than a simple villain reveal. She has been living under the control of Xu Zhijie, and the film makes it clear that his behaviour has deeply affected her. Chinese film criticism has specifically described the movie's version of Yingying as a victim rather than the predatory figure found in the original novel.

After Xu is exposed, Tang Yu's wife, A Yu, chooses to care about Yingying instead of treating her as responsible for her father's crimes. The ending therefore gives the girl the possibility of leaving that household and becoming part of a safer family environment. This is also where the film deliberately becomes more hopeful than the source material. Rather than ending entirely in darkness, the movie suggests that a child can escape the damage created by the family she was born into.


Yan does not simply walk away from everything he has done. He is eventually imprisoned, but one of the film's final emotional turns comes when Lin Yutong visits him. During that meeting, Yan learns that his father had actually bought an insurance policy for him before his death, a revelation that forces him to confront how badly he had misunderstood his father's intentions.

The moment is deliberately painful because Yan spent so much of the film believing that his father was only an obstacle between him and money. Discovering that his father had tried to leave something behind for him makes his earlier choices feel even more tragic.

The hidden passage is more than a clever mystery solution. It is the physical form of everything the characters have been hiding. Xu hides his crimes inside it, Tang Nuo accidentally discovers it, Yan's secret becomes connected to it and Lin finally uses the discovery to confront the person who hurt her. By the end, the passage is sealed. But the film suggests that closing a hole in a wall is much easier than repairing the damage left inside the people who knew what happened there.

That is why the final image carries more weight than simply saying the mystery has been solved. The building looks normal again, but the people living inside it cannot simply return to the lives they had before.


The title refers to more than Tang Nuo disappearing. The film is filled with people trying to make uncomfortable things disappear. Tang Nuo vanishes physically, Lin Yutong's assault is initially buried, Yan Wu hides his father's death and Xu Zhijie hides his crimes behind a wall. Even Yingying tries to disappear from the life controlled by her father and move towards the family she actually wants.

That is why the ending is less about identifying one final mastermind and more about what happens when buried secrets finally come into the light. Xu is exposed, Tang Nuo survives, Lin finds the courage to confront her attacker and Yan is forced to face the consequences of his own choices. So, did Xu Yingying mastermind Tang Nuo's disappearance? The film deliberately leaves that question open rather than confirming it outright. What is clear is that Yingying knows about her father's darkness, appears to steer events towards its exposure and ultimately escapes the home that had trapped her. The ending gives her a new family, while leaving viewers to decide just how much of what happened was deliberate.
