Reacher Season 4 episode 7 recap & ending explained: Did John Sampson die in the bomb explosion and what was hidden in the photograph?

Prime Video’s Reacher is Nick Santora’s television take on Lee Child’s Jack Reacher novels. Alan Ritchson plays the former military policeman who travels with a toothbrush, a sharp eye and very little patience for official stories.

Season 4, based on Child’s 2009 book Gone Tomorrow, moved the action from New York to Philadelphia and premiered on 12 August 2026 with three episodes, then weekly drops. A stranger on a subway dies in front of Reacher. He will not let it be filed as a simple suicide. That choice pulls him into a fight with people who can erase files, move agents and bury a programme.


The company around him is almost all new. Sydelle Noel is Philadelphia detective Tamara Green. Christopher Marquette is Jacob Merrick, a small-town cop whose sister Anna dies on that train. Agnez Mo and Anggun play Lila and Amisha Hoth. Kevin Corrigan is Detective Shaun Docherty. Kevin Weisman is journalist Russell Plum. Marc Blucas is Congressman John Sampson, with Kathleen Robertson as Elspeth. Aaron Poole is Springfield. Shawn Doyle is Leo Ahlquist.

Episode 7, Vote for Sampson, written by Scott Sullivan and directed by Sam Hill, arrived on 9 September 2026. The finale, Cut, follows on September 16.

Episode 6 ended with Reacher and Tamara cuffed in a van, Ahlquist’s mercenaries driving them into the woods to be shot. Episode 7 opens on that same van. The doors swing. The guns come up. Springfield kills the men first.

Sampson sent him. After Reacher forwarded the photograph from Anna’s drive, Sampson told Springfield to find Ahlquist. Springfield saw Reacher and Tamara being loaded into the vehicle and followed the execution crew instead of the scientist. Reacher being pulled out of a hole by someone else’s man still looks strange after four seasons of him walking through rooms. This time it fits. The season has been saying he cannot punch through a federal cover-up on his own.


They take the van, catch Ahlquist on the highway and ram him off the road. Reacher breaks his fingers until he talks. Tamara stays in the conversation. She has spent weeks trying to remain a cop while the case keeps dragging her off the page. By now she is past pretending this is a normal file.

Ahlquist gives them Operation Mongoose. After the 1995 Tokyo sarin attack, the CIA pushed DARPA into an off-the-books programme. Build chemical weapons. Take them apart. Invent antidotes. They could not do it on American soil, so they cut a deal with Indonesian general Putra. Delta Force trained his troops. Putra let them put a lab in the jungle. Most of the soldiers, Sampson included, were told it was malaria research. Nolan Cahill knew the truth.

Tamara asks what they should do with Ahlquist. Even if they stop Lila and Amisha, the two women could still find him and make him rebuild the formula. He promises he will not talk. Reacher has just watched him empty his life after two broken fingers. He kills him. Later it is written up as a car accident. Reacher’s line about hitting a deer is the only dry joke in the episode.

The photograph is not a keepsake. It is an old group shot from the Indonesia mission. Putra wanted to stand with the Americans. Behind them sat a whiteboard with the chemical formula. At the time the writing was too soft to read, so the picture went into the archive with the rest of the paperwork.


Then the files were digitised. Enhancement made the board readable. That is why Anna’s stolen drive mattered. She copied the image from a federal directory and deleted the original. That tripwire put Department of Defense watchers on her. Nolan did not want them to see the contents, so he followed her into the subway himself. After she died he called Foster at the CIA, the man behind Mongoose, and he called Ahlquist, who kept mercenaries because his pesticide business grew out of the same research.

Amisha and Lila are not reporters. Amisha served in Putra’s special forces. Lila is her protégé. They want the formula for money and because Amisha still answers to a dead general. Amisha took the original picture. She waited until the technology caught up. Lila wears a bracelet with seeds from the Indonesian plant the weapon needs. Reacher had noticed it earlier and stored it. Ahlquist confirms the plant is essential. Without it, the compound does not work.

We see them test a prototype on a homeless man. It works. Their chemist gets the order to make more. Ahlquist says the finished product can be turned into an aerosol. It hangs like fog and can clear a ten-block radius in seconds. Mongoose was supposed to produce an antidote. It never did. Putra learned the lab’s real purpose, stole the weapon and used it on a village whose leaders had turned against him. Washington buried that too.


So the photograph was never the prize on its own. It was the missing page of a recipe Lila already had half of.

Jacob’s thread is quieter. After Monty handed him to Docherty, it looked like the end of his week. Docherty drives him into an alley. For a second it plays like an execution. Then the cuffs come off.

The CIA visit to the station did that. Agents pulled Foster out of the cell Reacher had stuffed him into and told the local cops to forget the night. Docherty has spent the season trying to stay inside the rules. That visit broke it. He asks Jacob for the real story. Jacob gives him Ahlquist, the chemist, the drive.

Docherty already knows police found beakers and burners. He cannot chase Ahlquist in Delaware. He tells Jacob that if Reacher and Tamara need help in Philadelphia, they should call. Then he asks Jacob to hit him with the service revolver so the report says the prisoner escaped. Jacob does it, and asks him to pass an apology to Plum if Plum is still alive.

Jacob reaches Reacher and Tamara on the road back. He has Plum’s phone. Before Plum was shot, he had put feelers out about Anna’s files. A contact now replies. Lila is auctioning the drive on the dark web. Buyers have been promised a live demonstration. That means a public blast with the chemical payload before the bidding starts.


They guess an outdoor concert of film scores. Docherty throws police at the venue. It is clean. The wasted search costs him. He tells the three of them to disappear before someone in uniform spots them. Plum, he adds, is still in surgery.

They try again. A highway at rush hour would kill more people. Reacher calls Sampson, who is at a fundraiser with Elspeth and Springfield, and asks him to shut roads. Sampson listens, then realises they have the wrong target.

Sampson has spent most of the season looking like the man with something to hide. Episode 7 takes that off the table, then puts him in worse danger. He did not know about Mongoose. Cahill did. What Sampson knew, and had not told Reacher, is that when the United States later moved against Putra, he was on the team. He pulled the trigger. Amisha saw it.

That is why the fundraiser is the demo site. Lila and Amisha can show buyers the weapon and finish a grudge in the same blast. Jacob remembers Plum talking about a man flown in from Djibouti, Tomas Waberi. They do not have a picture of him. They have training. Reacher and Sampson run the same bomber checklist Reacher used on Anna in the first episode. Sampson finds Waberi in the crowd.

Reacher is still running for the gates when Sampson hangs up. He does not wait. He tackles Waberi and they go into the river. The device detonates underwater. The episode cuts. No body. No hand on the surface. No medic on the bank.


So did John Sampson die? The show does not say. The underwater blast is written to limit the chemical spread and to leave a way back if the writers want one. It is also written so that if he is gone, the death has weight. He stops shaking hands and acts like the soldier he used to be. The title Vote for Sampson sits differently after that. Earlier he is working a charity crowd. By the end the only vote that matters is the one he casts with his own body.

That is the ending of Episode 7. The photograph is a formula. Ahlquist is dead. Docherty has chosen a side and then had to pretend he did not. Lila and Amisha still have a working weapon and a buyer list. Plum is on a table. Sampson may be in the river.

Episode 8, Cut, the official brief is short. Reacher, Tamara and Jacob go on the attack as the real size of the plot comes into view. Reacher confronts the people responsible for Anna’s death. Jacob has to face what the week has done to his family. Plum, if he lives, gets a chance to make the reporting count. The Hoths are still free. Foster is still a CIA problem. The auction may already have a winner. If Sampson survived, he walks into the finale as the politician who jumped. If he did not, Reacher has one more name to collect.

The same day, Prime Video also launches the Neagley spin-off in full. That is a separate story. This one still has a chemical weapon loose in Philadelphia and a week to close it.


The hour is talkier than a standard Reacher episode. It has to be. Too many answers were parked in one place. Once Ahlquist talks, the rest of the plot has somewhere to run. Ritchson does less grinning here. Noel keeps Tamara sharp without turning her into a passenger. Blucas finally gets the scene the character has been owed. Marquette’s Jacob, who has spent weeks being dragged, is the one who brings the auction and Waberi into the room.
