Ted Lasso Season 4 episode 6 recap: Who is the new surprise return and why did Roy end up in hospital on New Year’s eve?

Ted Lasso started as a punchline. Jason Sudeikis first played the Kansas coach in old NBC Sports ads, then built a series with Bill Lawrence, Brendan Hunt and Joe Kelly. Jack Burditt is running season 4. The show returned to Apple TV on 5 August 2026 after three years away, ten episodes long, finale booked for 7 October. Ted is not managing the men anymore. He is coaching AFC Richmond’s second-division women’s side, the Lady Greyhounds, after coming back to London with Henry and Michelle.


Episode 6 is 'Don’t Jump Around Much Anymore'. It went out on 9 September 2026. Dylan Marron wrote it. Declan Lowney directed. It runs about 46 minutes. The regulars are in place: Sudeikis as Ted, Hannah Waddingham as Rebecca, Juno Temple as Keeley, Brett Goldstein as Roy, Hunt as Beard, Jeremy Swift as Higgins, Annette Badland as Mae, Andrea Anders as Michelle, Grant Feely as Henry. Tanya Reynolds plays Alice Chilton. Tracey Ullman is Zelda Southport. Faye Marsay is Lizzie. Abbie Hern is Gemma. Laura Haddock is Dr Erin Beaumont.

Matteo van der Grijn is Matthijs. The guest who actually tilts the night is Phil Dunster as Jamie Tartt, now at Barcelona, blonde and selling vodka.

The hour splits the night into three rooms. Ted stays at the Crown and Anchor. The players go to Zelda’s yacht. Rebecca, Keeley and Roy land at Jamie’s launch.


Apple Tartt is an Adam and Eve themed vodka night. Leaves. Blonde hair. Jamie on a stage introducing his own label like it is the most natural thing in the world. Season 4 had already parked him in Barcelona. A Trent Crimm piece in the premiere said as much. They kept him off screen until episode 6 so the women’s team could exist first. He does not get a whole episode of his own. He gets a party, a reunion, and then a corridor outside A&E.

Rebecca and Keeley arrive already worn down. Rebecca has been rowing with Matthijs after putting his daughter in the middle of a talk about him moving to London. He has gone quiet. Phone location off. Keeley is the one who told Roy to date other people so they could work out what was left between them. That experiment is now eating her. She knows he has seen someone more than once. She tells Rebecca it does not matter if Roy is with her at midnight. It does.

Roy walks in. Keeley did not plan for that. He says he only came to watch Jamie make a fool of himself. Jamie does not, not in the way Roy hoped. He misses them. He says it out loud. Rebecca asks how his Spanish is coming. He answers in French. He calls Roy hairy and talks like the dressing-room version of himself, only older, and a bit more willing to admit Barcelona has not replaced this group.


Roy tries to slip out. Then Jump Around starts. The title has been sitting there all episode. They meet in the middle of the floor and bounce like they used to. Roy’s knee has been a problem for weeks. One chorus and he is down. Jamie picks him up. Rebecca and Keeley follow. The launch is finished. The rest of their night is a hospital.

In the waiting area Jamie does what he does when he is trying to be useful. He talks. He offers Keeley and Rebecca advice that slides between actual sense and total rubbish. Voltaire comes out as Voltron. He floats the idea of kissing Rebecca at midnight because they both look stranded. It is clumsy. Matthijs arrives before it can become anything. Jamie is not here to restart the old triangle. He is here as the familiar face in a season that has been asking viewers to care about a new squad first.

Roy is in hospital because he jumped on a knee that could not take it. No twist. No mystery injury. He heard a song he could not sit out.

The mess starts when the doctor walks in. Dr Erin Beaumont is not a random night-shift name. Roy’s sister Jenni introduced them after episode 4, when Keeley’s “go and date other people” plan was still being treated like a grown-up idea. Roy actually liked her. Erin arrives in a sparkly maroon dress because she was meant to meet him later. She is his date, now standing over his bed.


Keeley meets her for the first time. Erin is composed, sharp, and unfortunately the sort of person Keeley cannot dismiss. A nurse briefly decides Jamie is Roy’s son. That is the one clean joke in the room. Erin clears most of them out and talks medical history with Keeley in that tight, polite way two women do when they both know the third person in the bed belongs to a fight they have not named yet.

Keeley goes back in to put Jenni on the phone. The call ends. Keeley leaves, then stops just outside the door. Roy is on the good stuff. He cannot see properly. He starts talking about how glad he is, how much this means, how he feels. Keeley hears him tell Erin he loves her. That is the line that lands. She walks. She looks wrecked. She does not hear what comes next. He says Keeley’s name.

Erin hears that part. Keeley does not. So Keeley goes home sure he has chosen the doctor. Erin stays and understands he has chosen Keeley. Nobody closes the loop before midnight.

That is the hospital story, in full. Not a grand speech. A doped-up man talking to the wrong face, and two women leaving with opposite versions of the same sentence.

Ted skips both parties. He stays at Mae’s with Michelle and Henry. Henry is pulling pints for extra pay and treating the shift like a proper job. He ends up asleep in the stock room. Mae runs the pub the way she always has.


This is the quiet strand, and the one that feels most like the show people came back for. Ted and Michelle play darts. She asks about work and about whether he is seeing anyone. He has been low since he suspended Alice after the Chelsea match. He is not sure he fits this team yet. Michelle does not let him hide behind a joke. She tells him to believe in himself. She has not found anyone in London. He mentions the stage manager from Jane’s play, the one he met last week. He does not dress it up.

They go upstairs to the loft. He pours a proper drink. The talk gets plainer. He says the divorce looked easy from her side. She says she hated herself after it. He says she always saw things in him he could not see. That is the scene. Not a reunion. A clearing of the air.

Near midnight she pushes him outside so he can stand with his team. When he comes back later she has left a new Believe sign in the inverse colours of the old one. Teal background. Yellow letters. The point is simple enough. Divorce did not make him a failure. He can date. He can coach. He thought he needed her blessing. She gave it.

Ted does not kiss anyone at twelve. He stands on the green with the Lady Greyhounds after they bail on Zelda’s boat. He wishes Alice a happy new year as if the suspension is already behind them. Practice will happen. That is his version of a midnight speech.


Zelda throws the team a yacht night packed with rich men she wants them to charm. It is meant to be networking. It does not stay that.

Lizzie immediately stuffs expensive food into her bag and tells the others to act normal. Beard turns up in a red suit that matches one of the players. He spends the evening reading Claudine wrong. He goes in for a kiss. She is not interested. She thinks he is too old. He takes it in the moment. It will sit with him. Jane is still a bruise. This does not help.

Alice almost stays home. She is still suspended. She hates her outfit. She assumes the squad does not like her. Her partner tells her to get out of the house. She goes. Gemma meets her halfway. They talk about their past as teammates. For a short stretch it looks like they have turned a corner. Then a drunk Lizzie tells Alice not to worry, the team loves her. Alice realises Gemma repeated her insecurity to the group. She snaps and walks off. Three steps forward, two back. That is their pattern.

The party itself goes odd. Masks. A speech. A gun gag. Name-drops that make the cabin feel like a private club nobody asked to join. Higgins and his wife leave early. The players follow when the night starts looking like a film they did not agree to be in. They reach the Crown and Anchor before midnight, get told they are still barred until the clock changes, and end up on the green. That is where Ted finds them. That is where they actually bring the year in.


Zelda is still a question. Useful one week. Chaotic the next. The team survived her guest list. They did not get much peace from it.

The last stretch of the episode is four clocks hitting twelve in four different moods.

At the hospital, Matthijs walks in on Rebecca. He wanted the surprise. They kiss at midnight. For now they are all right. Living in the same city full time is still the test they have been dodging, but the year starts with them in the same room again.

Keeley is already gone. She left on the half-confession. She does not hear Roy say her name. Erin does. Roy is still in the bed, still cloudy, still unaware he has just handed two women two different stories. Jamie is still nearby, still trying to be useful, still not the point of anyone’s midnight.

On the green, the Lady Greyhounds and Ted bring the year in together after the yacht went sour. Alice is with them. Ted treats her like a coach coming back to work, not a problem to manage. That is a choice. It will matter when training starts again.

Back at the loft, Ted finds the new Believe sign. That is the last image the episode wants you to sit with. Not the dance. Not the vodka. The sign in the opposite colours, left by the woman he used to be married to, telling him he is allowed to start again.



The surprise return is Jamie Tartt. Phil Dunster is back for the first time this season, blonde, under contract to talk about Apple Tartt, and still the person Roy will jump for even when he should not. Roy is in hospital because that jump wrecked his knee. The confession is the aftershock. Keeley heard “I love you” pointed at Erin. Erin heard “Keeley.” Midnight arrived before anyone fixed it.

Episode 7 lands on Apple TV on 16 September 2026. Jane Becker and Bill Wrubel are on the script. There is no official plot card yet, but the unfinished business is obvious. Keeley does not know the second half of Roy’s sentence. Erin does. Rebecca and Matthijs have to decide if a hospital kiss is a reset or a delay. Alice comes back from suspension.

Ted has Michelle’s blessing and a stage manager still sitting in last week’s episode. Beard’s night with Claudine is the kind of bruise this show likes to let quietly change a person. Jamie may already be on a plane. The visit was built as a visit.
