‘We are together’: Lamine Yamal alleged racism row sparks outrage as Vinícius Júnior backs Barça teen; La Liga under fire

Barcelona’s La Liga match against Atlético Madrid at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano on April 4 was marred by controversy after alleged racist taunts were directed against Lamine Yamal by some home fans during the second half. He was actively participating on the right flank when the shouts started. The 19-year-old was off to a great start to the game, dribbling with authority, playing with confidence, and making sharp passes outside the boot.

While there was no immediate action against the alleged abuse, as the match progressed, his body language began to shift, showing visible signs of discomfort, as reported by BBC Sport. However, later, when Yamal was substituted, teammates and staff gathered around him on the sidelines, offering support as he walked off with his head down, clearly upset.

The incident has since gone viral across social media and fan forums, drawing widespread coverage. Football journalist Fabrizio Romano also shared updates on X. Amid the growing outrage, Vinícius Júnior came out in support of Yamal, standing in solidarity with the teen.

The incident started halfway through the second half when some Atlético Madrid fans inside the Riyadh Air Metropolitano began chanting toward Yamal. The winger kept playing, but as the noise continued, his body language indicated that he was becoming increasingly unhappy.

Even though there were procedures in place for such circumstances, the referee did not formally intervene at that point or immediately halt play. Before being removed from the game, Yamal continued to play for a few more moments. This sequence raises concerns about how quickly similar instances are recognised and addressed during live matches.




“It happens many times… hopefully we can continue this fight. We have to be together,” Vinícius Jr. addressed Lamine Yamal's mistreatment during a pre-match press conference prior to Real Madrid's Champions League encounter, saying, "We have to be together."

He continued by saying that athletes like them "have a stronger voice" and should utilise it to help those who are in such circumstances.

Recurring situations in Spanish football over the past few seasons have shaped Vinícius Jr.'s response. The Real Madrid attacker himself endured criticism during the 2023–24 season, including incidents involving opposing fanbases, after the well publicised racism case at Valencia's Mestalla in May 2023.

Also, in September 2023 an eight-year-old girl was racially abused after she wore a Vinicius shirt leading to an arrest, also in September 2024 four people were arrested because they spearheaded a hate campaign against him online.

Despite the fact that these occurrences occur in various locations, they highlight a persistent problem in the league. In that regard, his backing for Yamal surpasses solidarity and highlights an issue that has endured in spite of mounting criticism, saying things like- “I hope Lamine can continue this fight against racism as me, we are together."
