Years after Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt's highly publicized split, multiple members of the Jolie-Pitt family have slowly started distancing themselves from the Pitt surname - some legally, others more quietly through public appearances and professional credits.

The latest to reportedly take that step is eldest son Maddox, adding his name to a growing list of siblings who have either formally or informally stopped using Pitt publicly.

Here's a closer look at which children have dropped the surname and how.

Maddox Jolie-Pitt becomes the latest sibling to remove 'Pitt'

Maddox, 24, is reportedly seeking to legally remove Pitt from his surname, according to legal documents obtained by Us Weekly. If approved, he would legally become Maddox Chivan Jolie, using his middle name in place of his father's surname.

The move follows earlier signs of separation from the surname. In February 2026, Maddox worked as an assistant director on Couture, where he was credited simply as Maddox Jolie.

His reported filing surfaced only hours after news broke that Brad Pitt secured a partial legal victory in his ongoing Château Miraval battle with Angelina Jolie.

Shiloh made perhaps the most public move among the siblings. On her 18th birthday in May 2024, she filed legal paperwork requesting the removal of "Pitt" from her surname. Later that year, a judge officially approved the change. Since then, she has publicly gone by Shiloh Jolie.

Zahara Jolie quietly introduced herself without Pitt

Zahara never publicly announced a formal name change, but she noticeably stopped using Pitt during public appearances. In 2023, when joining the Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority, she introduced herself as: Zahara Marley Jolie.

She later continued using the same name publicly during her time at college, further fueling speculation that she had informally dropped the surname.

Vivienne Jolie removed Pitt from Broadway credits

Vivienne also appeared to quietly distance herself from the surname. When working alongside Angelina Jolie on Broadway's The Outsiders, the production Playbill listed her simply as Vivienne Jolie, leaving out Pitt entirely.

Though no legal filing has been reported, the credit change drew widespread attention online.

Which Jolie-Pitt children still publicly use the surname?

Not all siblings have made changes publicly. As of now, Pax and Knox have not publicly removed Pitt from their names or announced plans to do so.

Maddox's case remains particularly notable because Angelina Jolie adopted him before meeting Brad Pitt, who later became his legal father.

Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt's family dynamics remain under scrutiny

Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt were married from 2014 to 2019 after separating in 2016. Since then, legal battles surrounding custody, finances, and Château Miraval have kept the former couple in headlines.

As more of their children publicly move away from the Pitt surname, public curiosity surrounding the family dynamic continues to grow.
