Jennifer Lawrence joins Instagram after years away, but her Amy Schumer follow sparks Palestine-Israel backlash: ‘I don’t understand’
Jennifer Lawrence’s Instagram debut has sparked unexpected backlash after fans noticed she follows Amy Schumer, despite Lawrence’s public support for Palestine. While some questioned the friendship, others defended the actress and pointed to her past comments about Gaza and her long-standing bond with Schumer.
Lawrence, who has been vocal in her support for Palestine and has called the situation in Gaza a genocide, is following Amy Schumer, a comedian known for her outspoken pro-Israel stance. The contradiction has left some fans scratching their heads while others rush to her defense.
Jennifer Lawrence joins Instagram and the following list causes uproar
Lawrence has been open about her reluctance to join social media. In a 2018 interview with InStyle, she explained, "I'm on it. But I'm a voyeur: I watch, I don't speak. There is always so much backlash". She added, "I really don't want to welcome that unless it's absolutely necessary. I don't want to put myself out there for no reason".
But now she is here, and her following list is under intense scrutiny. As of writing, @jlaw follows only 46 accounts, including her Hunger Games co-star Josh Hutcherson, Leonardo DiCaprio, the Kardashian-Jenner sisters, Andy Cohen, and Ms. Rachel. But one name in particular has sparked heated debate: Amy Schumer.
The Amy Schumer connection
For fans who have followed Lawrence's vocal support for Palestine, the friendship is a tough pill to swallow. One fan wrote, "I want to love Jennifer Lawrence so much she's so talented but I genuinely don't understand how she claims to support Palestine while being bffs with Amy Schumer."

"People who r upset abt Jlaw following Amy Schumer, you better give that same energy to all these celebrities who also follow her like Glenn Close, Viola Davis, Julianne Moore, Anne Hathaway, Elle Fanning, Michelle Pfeiffer, Natalie Portman, Jennifer Coolidge and many more," one user commented.

Lawrence made those comments at the San Sebastian Film Festival in September 2025 while promoting her film Die My Love. When asked about Gaza, she said, "I'm terrified and it's mortifying. What's happening is no less than a genocide and it's unacceptable. I'm terrified for my children, for all of our children". According to Variety, moderators tried to stop the questions, but Lawrence answered anyway .
