RESCENE went viral after four members were banned from a water slide for weighing under 180kg combined, exposing the dangerously low weights normalised among K-Pop idols. The incident sparked widespread concern as fans noted the members appear visibly thinner, reigniting criticism of the industry's extreme beauty standards.

A rising K-Pop group found themselves in an unexpected situation recently when they were denied access to a water slide due to their combined weight falling below the minimum safety requirement. On September 7, the YouTube channel KBS WORLD TV uploaded a video titled "RESCENE My Day Trip Behind," which showed the group's members attempting to enjoy a water park during their trip .
The incident quickly went viral on social media platforms, with one video accumulating over 9 million views as fans and netizens expressed disbelief at the revelation. Fans believe this travel vlog, meant to be lighthearted, exposed the extreme reality of K-Pop industry beauty standards.
The video captured a moment that left both the members and viewers stunned. As Woni, 22, Liv, 19, Minami, 19, and Zena, 17, prepared to ride the slide together, a safety official informed them that the facility required a combined weight of at least 180kg for four riders. Member May had opted out, citing fear after a previous experience.
When the four members stepped on the scale, the measurement showed their total weight did not reach 180kg, meaning the average weight per member was under 45kg. The safety official suggested that another person would need to join them, ultimately leaving the four members unable to try the slide.
The members, visibly surprised, broke into laughter at the absurd situation. However, for viewers, the implications were far more serious than a failed amusement park attempt.
Many fans expressed genuine worry about the members' health and well-being.
One user wote, "K-pop is terrifying because what do you mean you're a grown woman and you don't even weigh 45kg?" Another fan wrote, "I really hope they're doing well, they look noticeably thinner since the bloom era, and I'm worried it could be from how hard they've been working".
The shock deepened when considering the members' heights. With most members standing around 160cm, a weight of 45kg translates to a BMI of about 17.5, which falls into the "underweight" category under World Health Organisation standards. One netizen observed, "This is almost the weight of an upper elementary school student".
As one commenter noted, "Female idols are almost all like this," highlighting how deeply ingrained these dangerously low weight expectations have become in the industry. Check out more reactions below:
The incident comes at a remarkable moment in RESCENE's career. The five-member group, consisting of Woni, Liv, Minami, May, and Zena, debuted in March 2024 under The Muze Entertainment, a small to mid-sized agency. Despite receiving positive reviews for their music quality, the group initially struggled to gain traction in a market dominated by major entertainment companies.
Their breakthrough came in 2026 when their 2024 release Love Attack unexpectedly surged on streaming platforms, climbing to number 1 on Melon Top 100 and achieving a "chart reversal" that industry experts dubbed a "small company miracle". Hanteo Chart data revealed that RESCENE's album sales increased by 198% compared to their debut release, with their latest album Lip Bomb selling 106,513 copies.
The turning point was fueled by viral content, particularly member Minami's "gyaru" concept video titled "I Came to Geoje With a Gyaru," which recorded 7.95 million views and spawned the popular meme "Geoje Yahoo!". On July 14, 2026, RESCENE achieved their first music show win with Pretty Girl on The Show, cementing their rise from relative obscurity to becoming a "trending" group.
After ruling the summer, the girl group will be back with new music in November.
